ELK GROVE, CA

One person died in a seven-vehicle collision Friday afternoon on Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove.

At about 5:15 p.m., a sport-utility vehicle that witnesses said was “traveling at a high rate of speed” rear-ended a Toyota Prius that had slowed in stop-and-go traffic during rush hour on the busy thoroughfare, said Elk Grove Police spokesman officer Christopher Trim.

The collision killed the Prius driver, whom police identified only as a man, and caused a chain reaction involving five other vehicles, three of which were significantly damaged, Trim said.

The driver of the SUV and two other people involved in the pileup were injured and taken to hospitals, he said.

The crash happened near the intersection of Laguna Boulevard and Laguna Oaks Drive.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim once family members are notified of his death, Trim said.
