MAUMEE (13abc Action News) -- UPDATE: On Tuesday morning, a fire ripped through a Maumee duplex on the 100 block of W. John St.

John Jennings told 13abc that he, his girl friend, her daughter and two cats were inside the residence during the time of the fire.

Jennings said his girl friend woke up to the smell of smoke. They all rushed out of the duplex and were only able to grab one of the cats. The other was later saved by a Maumee firefighter.

Jennings said items in the back of the duplex will have to be thrown out. They may be able to salvage a few things from in the front of the multi-family home.

"Her bedroom's gone," said Jennings. The kitchen is gone. I've been in the house once and it's not a pretty site."

On Wednesday, the single mother and her daughter had plans to visit Miami University's orientation. Because of the fire that trip to Oxford, Ohio was canceled.

A friend is working on setting up a GoFundMe account. Stay connected to 13abc.com for ways to donate to this family.

A family of three is safe after an overnight fire in a duplex.

Flames broke out just before 2:00AM on the 100 block of W. John St. in Maumee, behind the businesses on Conant Street.

The fire appears to have started near the back of the home.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the flames, but they remained at the home for hours investigating a possible cause and putting out "hotspots."

The fire chief tells 13abc two adults and an adult daughter escaped the lower half of the duplex unharmed.

They are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The tenants of the upstairs portion of the building were not home at the time of the fire.
