West Point authorities say a fallen tree during severe weather is responsible for a baby's death.

WEST POINT, Ga. – West Point authorities say a baby is dead after a tree pummeled a house early Friday evening.

The West Point Fire Department and the West Point Police Department say the incident happened in the 1200 block of East 8th St. They say a severe thunderstorm caused a tree to fall on a home.

When authorities arrived on the scene, the baby was still inside the house. After police determined that the baby was unresponsive, they called the Troup County Deputy Coroner. The deputy coroner pronounced the infant dead soon after. The parents were also on the scene and notified of their baby’s death. No identities are being released at this time.

This is the first death related to several severe thunderstorms that swept across the Chattahoochee Valley Thursday and Friday.
