CAMPBELL, CA -- A 30-year-old bicyclist died Sunday afternoon after he was struck by a speeding car on San Tomas Expressway near Winchester Boulevard in Campbell, the CHP reported.

The CHP did not immediately release the names of the bicyclist and motorist, nor their cities of residence.

According to Officer Ross Lee, around 4 p.m. the 19-year-old driver of a Mustang speeding northbound on San Tomas veered to the right and struck the bicyclist, who was riding on the right shoulder. The car then spun out of control, struck the center median and came to rest in the right two lanes.

The bicyclist suffered major injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorist was booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges of driving under the influence.
