New Buffalo Twp. An elderly man is dead after a crash in New Buffalo Township.

Police say Friday afternoon, Bernard Lootens, 89, of Michigan City, pulled on to U.S. 12 from Yunge Road and was hit by a semitractor-trailer.

Lootens had to be freed from his car using Jaws of Life.

He was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, but died several hours later.

The man driving the truck was not injured.

Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this accident.
