A driver was killed Monday afternoon when an SUV crashed into a BMW stopped on the shoulder of the Sam Rayburn Tollway in Coppell.

Highway patrol troopers were called about 1:10 p.m. to the southbound Sam Rayburn Tollway, near the North Denton Tap Road overpass, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lonny Haschel said.

A preliminary investigation showed that a black Cadillac SUV headed south in the left lane of the tollway left its lane and drove onto the left shoulder, rode up the concrete center barrier and collided with a maroon BMW sedan that had stopped on the shoulder, Haschel said.

The BMW driver, whose identity has not yet been released, died at the scene.

The driver of the Cadillac was not injured, but a passenger in the SUV was taken to Medical Center of Plano with unknown injuries, Haschel said.

Officials are investigating the incident and why the Cadillac left its lane.
