A construction worker died Thursday morning in a fall from a new dormitory building on the campus of the University of Vermont.

Police say the man in his 50s fell from the top floor of the six-story residence hall under construction on UVM's main campus, right next to the hospital. The cause of the fall is under investigation.

UVM Police Chief Lianne Tuomey: The information that we have is that he had a harness on and that it was removed from him at the scene.

Reporter Tyler Dumont: Does it look like it may have failed?

Chief Lianne Tuomey: We're really preliminary in the investigation right now and I do not details on that and we won't probably for a while.

UVM says the man was an employee of Engelberth Construction. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

Construction on the site has been halted while authorities investigate.
