NEWARK, THE CESSPOOL OF NEW JERSEY: 1 suspect dead, 5 arrested after carjacking, chase and barricade situation in Newark

Anthony Johnson reporting live
One person is dead following an apparent carjacking and police pursuit situation that has escalated into a barricade situation in Newark Tuesday morning.

Newark police said the situation started with a carjacking of a silver Jaguar on Millington Avenue near Nairn Place at about 6:40 a.m. Six suspects in that incident, who police said are all juveniles, fled the area but Newark police weren't far behind. While pursuing the car, the suspects crashed the car and jumped out near the intersection of Hawthorne Avenue and Demarest Street. One of them was struck by a police car and died at the scene.

This was the scene from NewsCopter 7:

Three others were arrested. The other two, police said, barricaded themselves in a house on West Runyon Street. They eventually came out and surrendered to police after officers threw tear gas grenades into the home.

Police said they believe the same group of juveniles was involved in two other crimes in the area after the carjacking -- a shooting and robbery. The car matched the description for the suspect vehicle in those incidents.

Police said the victim in the carjacking was injured, but it's not clear yet how seriously he or she was hurt.
