Double fatal accident on Highway 183 outside Castroville

CASTROVILLE, Calif.

Two people were killed on Highway 183 near Espinosa Road outside of Castroville at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday.






Traffic was heavy and slow on Highway 183 before the crash occurred. Witnesses said they saw a Ford Thunderbird weaving in and out of traffic before hitting a guardrail and colliding with a big rig.


"A witness advised that a white Ford crossed over the yellow line, onto the southbound lane, where it collided with the guardrail. The Ford was then struck by a big rig truck traveling southbound," CHP Officer Oscar Loza said.


The 56-year-old Salinas man who was driving the Thunderbird was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 25-year-old Salinas woman, also died at the scene. Their names were not released.


The truck driver was not injured.


Highway 183 was closed between Cooper Road and Espinosa Road from 7:15 p.m. until 11 p.m.
