Edwardsville, IL (KTRS)
A student at Southern Illinois University is recovering after being injured in a small laboratory explosion and fire.
Officials at the Edwardsville campus say the 23-year-old male student was working in the new science building around 3 p.m. on Tuesday when there was a chemical reaction. The student suffered cuts to both hands, along with chemical burns on both arms. He was transported to a hospital.
The building was evacuated. Firefighters with the Edwardsville Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
University spokesman Doug McIlhagga says damage to the lab was minimal.
He says the building was re-opened for classes on Wednesday.
