Coast Guard suspends search in NJ, MD for missing crew member of container ship Ibrahim Dede

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — 

The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing crew member Wednesday between Bayonne, New Jersey, and Ocean City, Maryland.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received notification at approximately 4:30 p.m on Tuesday. from the 600-foot, Marshall Islands–flagged freight ship Ibrahim Dede of a missing crew member.

The crew member was last reported aboard after departing Bayonne, New Jersey. The crew discovered the man was missing while the ship was in transit to its next port.

A Coast Guard Station New York 45-Foot Response Boat crew, a Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City H-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City C-130 Hercules airplane crew searched for the crew member from 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. They covered the areas along the coast from Bayonne to Ocean City. Coast Guard crews also searched farther north up to New York Harbor and farther south to Chincoteague, Virginia.

The freight ship Ibrahim Dede continued en route to Norfolk International Terminal where it is currently docked.

USCG Searching for Missing Boxship Crewman

Boxship Crewman Missing off New Jersey

The U.S.Coast Guard is searching for a crew member of the Marshall Islands-flagged container ship Ibrahim Dede who was reported missing on August 11, while the ship was transiting from Bayonne, New Jersey to Ocean City, Maryland.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received notification at approximately 4:30 pm local time yesterday from the 600-foot Ibrahim Dede of the missing crew member, suspected to have fallen overboard.

The crew member was last reported on board after departing Bayonne, New Jersey. The crew discovered the man was missing while the boxship was in transit to Ocean City.

A Coast Guard Station New York 45-Foot Response Boat crew, a Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and an Air Station Elizabeth City C-130 Hercules airplane crew have all launched in response to aid the search.

The 2008-built Ibrahim Dede is continuing to Norfolk International Terminal to dock.

The vessel is operated by the U.K.-based Turkon Line, and owned by Germany’s Kalkavan Shipmanagement Hamburg.
