A bridge inspector with McClain and Company has died, another injured after their bridge inspection truck (a Snooper series 260C) tipped over while on Interstate 84 in West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

An on-ramp to Interstate-84 eastbound in West Hartford remained closed on Thursday morning following a deadly bridge inspection truck (a Snooper series 260-C) crash from the afternoon before.





A man has died after his bridge inspection truck (a Snooper series 260C) tipped over while on Interstate 84 in West Hartford on Wednesday afternoon.

The eastbound on ramp near exit 43 from Park Road as well as Trout Brook Drive in West Hartford, which is underneath the bridge, were closed because of the one-vehicle crash.


Investigators said they were still trying to piece together what happened near the Park Road section of the highway. The ramp is expected to remain closed through the morning commute.

The bridge inspection truck (a Snooper series 260-C) involved in the crash remained at the scene Thursday morning, the day after an incident in Groton.

Eyewitness News learned that the same company was doing work there as well.

"There was one operator and a crew there one individual got hurt,” said Chief Richard Winn, West Hartford Fire Department. “The rest scattered when we got here. There was one individual lying in the street."

State police said the bridge inspection truck and its boom tipped and pinned a man underneath. The crew was working on the entrance ramp to I-84 off Trout Brook Drive.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old William Shook of Middlefield. He was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital, according to troopers.

On Tuesday, two men were stuck dangling in a bucket off of the Gold Star Bridge in Groton. While no one was hurt, Eyewitness News learned that the Department of Transportation employed the same subcontractor in both incidents.








 







The name of the subcontractor was McClain and Company.

"Everybody up there, obviously that's on their mind, but they're also making sure we can get this operation without hurting or anybody else getting killed,” Winn said.

State police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

The DOT said it has already suspended doing business with McClain and Company until the investigation is completed.
