79-year-old woman driver dies, another driver injured following wrong-way head-on crash

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. — 


State police are investigating a Friday morning two-vehicle crash that killed a 79-year-old Nottoway County woman.

Sgt. Steve Vick, spokesman for Virginia State Police, said Betty H. Hamilton of Burkeville died as a result of her injuries sustained in the wreck, which happened on Route 723 not far from Route 650 around 11:45 a.m.

“A 1997 Dodge Ram was traveling south on Lewiston Plank Road when it crossed over into the north bound lanes and struck a 2003 Buick Lasabre head-on,” Vick said.

The pickup driver, 53-year-old James A. McGinnis of Crewe, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Vick said he not wearing a seat belt.

Hamilton was first transported to Southside Regional Hospital. She was then taken to VCU Medical Center where she died from her injuries. She was wearing a seat belt.

Officials said no charges have been filed, but that the crash remains under investigation.
