2 rescued after a 40-foot steel fishing trawler sunk in Sandy Hook Channel

NEW YORK – Coast Guard crews are responding to the reported sinking of a fishing vessel in Sandy Hook Channel, Tuesday.

Coast Guard Sector New York command center watchstanders were notified that a 40-foot steel fishing trawler had begun taking on water at 4:30 p.m. and sank shortly after.

Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook launched two rescue boatcrews to search for the sunken vessel.

Other local agencies involved with the search included:
New Jersey State Police
NYPD
FDNY
NYPD Aviation

NYPD is conducting a side scan sonar search to get a definitive location of the sunken vessel.

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
