1 driver critical after his car was hit by train when it ended up on train tracks following a traffic accident in Missouri


BRIDGETON, Mo. - 

A traffic crash that ended with a car getting run over with a train had both ramps to Missouri state highway 370 from Interstate 270 closed.

The crash happened just before 2:30 Saturday afternoon on the ramp from southbound I-270 to westbound 370. 

A spokesperson from the Bridgeton Fire Department says a Chrysler Sebring went off the exit ramp, drove through the grass and came to a stop on railroad tracks. Then, the car was hit by a train headed westbound with the man still in the car. The man, 85-year-old Webster Abernathy, is in critical condition and has life threatening injuries.

The accident had ramps from southbound and northbound 270 to westbound 370 closed, they have since reopened.

The investigation of the crash has been turned over to the Missouri State Highway patrol.
