Deadly crash closes busy El Cajon intersection

SAN DIEGO, CA

One person was killed Tuesday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash in a busy intersection of El Cajon.

The crashes occurred around 3:40 p.m. near West Main Street and S. Marshall Avenue, according to El Cajon police.  California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert and blocked access to the area, including the exit and entrance ramps of Interstate 8 due to its proximity to the crash.

The California Highway Patrol said a woman driving an older Lexus SUV likely suffered a seizure as she was exiting I-8 onto El Cajon’s Main St. off-ramp. Her teenage daughter, sitting in the passenger seat, reached over to apply the emergency brakes and tried steering the vehicle, before it slammed into the back of a Prius, belonging to WorldPac.

The CHP said the impact from that high speed collision sent the Prius into a red pickup truck which overturned, then hit a BMW sedan being driven by Austyn Mcintosh.

The drivers of the SUV and pickup truck were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The driver of the Prius succumbed to their injuries.

Heartland Fire crews used the Jaws of Life to get the victim out of the Prius. The CHP only identified the victim as a possible Hispanic man in his early 60’s.

Mcintosh said he just bought the BMW a week earlier, but thankful he was not hurt.

All lanes were re-opened by 7 p.m
