A highway worker stuck and killed Tuesday afternoon in Lincoln County has been identified as Marcus Wydeven, 50, of Tomahawk.

The incident happened Tuesday around 2:30 p.m. on Highway 17 near Smith Road northeast of Merrill.

Deputies said Wydeven had been with the Lincoln County Highway Department for 20 years.

According to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, Mary Robinson, 84, Antigo was traveling south on 17 when she struck a highway worker holding a stop sign.

Investigators said Robinson's vehicle went off the road and rolled over landing in a creek. Wydeven was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Robinson was also transported for unknown, non-life threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for several hours and a detour was in place.

We need to force drivers to take driving refresher courses every 5 years or more often.  Drivers must also be tested for eye-sight, hearing, drugs, etc.  Many deaths would be prevented if we do so.  Please remember that a vehicle is a lethal weapon and only a regularly-trained and capable person should operate it.
