A maintenance worker was injured in a propane explosion at the Coweta County Jail on Friday.

Edward Monroe was working in a portable commercial kitchen that is currently being used to handle the cooking needs while the jail kitchen is under construction.

After experiencing issues with the propane not staying lit, Monroe attempted to relight the pilot light when a build-up of propane exploded, causing a flashback, according to Lt. Col. James Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.

“Luckily he was wearing glasses, or it could have been a lot worse,” Yarbrough said, who also indicated that the incident would not interfere with the food services for inmates.

Monroe was transported to Piedmont Newnan to be treated for burns on his arm and face. Several trustees were also treated for minor burns.
