Fiery crash involving fuel truck leaves 4 injured, shuts down Hwy. 11 in Pelham, Alabama

 UPDATE, 1 p.m.
The Pelham Police Department says it could be 5 p.m. before a section of Highway 11 between Chathan Court and Lakeview Methodist Church reopens following this morning's crash involving a fuel tanker.

It now appears the section of Hwy 11 from just north of Chathan Ct to Lakeview Methodist Churh will now be closed until possibly 5 p.m.," a police spokesperson said in a statement. "We will continue to provide updates as often as possible."
UPDATE, 9:49 a.m.

Pelham police say people who live on Chatham Court, Houston Drive and Kelly Drive can return home after being evacuated following a fiery crash on Highway 11 that sent four people to the hospital and caused a massive fuel spill.

Drone video just posted to YouTube by Kevin Henderson of SkyBama shows flames and smoke billowing from the large-scale accident site near County Road 52.

Pelham Police Department expects part of Highway 11 to be closed until 2 p.m.

Reporter on the scene: 4 people injured in the accident. Two people were in the car. Two people were in the tanker. The fire is contained but power is still out. Officials on the scene say 9,000 gallons of 87-octane spilled.

From Shelby County Sheriff's Office: "On Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at approximately 7 a.m., the Shelby County Sheriff's Office was asked by the Pelham Police Department and the Pelham Fire Department to assist with a motor vehicle accident on Shelby County Road 11 in the area of County Road 52., involving a tanker truck.

Deputies are closing approximately four miles of County Road 11 (both lanes of travel), from Old Hwy 280 to County 36, until the scene has been safely cleared by the Pelham Fire Department and Chelsea Fire Department.
Shelby County Road 11 should be avoided during this time."

"Our deputies are assisting Pelham Police with a motor vehicle accident on Shelby County Road 11 at County 36. Both lanes of traffic are be shut down on County Road 11 from HWY 280 to County Road 36 due to power lines being down.

Motorists are asked to find an alternate route of travel. Updates will be provided as they become available."


Pelham first responders are working a serious accident and evacuating homes nearby the crash site. Very few details are being released right now, but we do know the crash happened at Highway 11 and Deer Spring Road in Pelham. That's near the Oak Mountain State Park.

A fuel spill and fire are said to be involved, so officers are evacuating people and closing some roads nearby.
