SANFORD, NC (WNCN) —

A recent Carrboro High School graduate died after an incident involving a boat trailer near Sanford on Tuesday night, officials say.

20-year-old Allison Bennett, a 2013 Carrboro High grad, was riding in a boat trailer that was being pulled by a truck around 10 pm, said NC Highway Patrol officials.

When the truck was near Buffalo Lakes in Harnett County, the truck driver drifted off the road and then over-corrected, causing Bennett to fall out, troopers said.

After falling out, Bennett was hit by the trailer, officials told WNCN.

The driver of the truck, Anthony James Pantano, age 29, , an Army soldier in the Special Forces, ran from the scene, NC Highway Patrol officials said.

Despite Pantano’s leaving the scene, there is no active search for him, officials told WNCN.

On a Facebook page that appears to belong to Bennett, she apparently spent the day with friends and family boating on the lake, uploading several photos in the afternoon before her tragic death.

Bennett was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but died there later.
