NEW HANOVER COUNTY

Two New Hanover County school maintenance workers were injured Wednesday morning while working at Brogden Hall at New Hanover High School.

Deputy Superintendent Rick Holliday said he received a call at 10:26 a.m. that two electricians working in Brogden Hall had fallen from scaffolding and emergency medical services were called for the two injured workers.

Holliday said the electricians have been working on a project all week to replace lighting in the gymnasium and a problem with the scaffolding led to the two employees fall.

“They had completed, as a understand it, replacing the new lights—a florescent lighting system,” he said. “They were moving some of the banners in the gym so they would not obstruct the lighting, and that was when the scaffolding malfunctioned.”

Holliday said both were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and Superintendent Tim Markley was there with the workers and their families.

He added that he did not know the condition of either worker and did not release the names of the employees.

Holliday said that an investigation into the cause of incident had already begun. New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office also is looking into the incident.
