Oklahoma highway officials say a state Department of Transportation worker was killed when he was struck by a vehicle in a work zone.

An ODOT spokesman says 47-year-old Gordon Pipkin died Friday after he was struck while working with a maintenance crew on U.S. Highway 81 near Rush Springs.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports that the vehicle crashed into a drainage ditch after striking Pipkin and investigators were trying to determine what caused the driver to veer of the road and hit Pipkin.

ODOT spokesman Cody Boyd said Pipkin was a transportation equipment operator and had worked for ODOT since May.
