4 injured in Novato, California after a Piper Cherokee plane crash

A family of four was injured Sunday after their plane crashed while landing at Marin County Airport in Novato.

The incident occurred shortly before noon when the Piper Cherokee went off the runway and into a ditch, said Marin County sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Frey. He said the family is from Reno and the pilot might have had a problem with the landing gear.

The occupants were a couple and their two children, said Novato fire Capt. Don Fletcher. They were treated for minor to moderate injuries, he said.

A small amount of fluid spilled from the plane into the ditch, and it was cleaned up with absorbent booms.

Federal aviation authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

The names of the plane’s occupants were not available.
