A deer in the road caused a crash that ended in a fiery explosion and hurt two people early Thursday.

Crystal Grote, 28, swerved to avoid the animal and lost control of her 2001 Mercury Cougar just after 2:30 a.m. on East Miami River Road west of Harrison Avenue, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.

Her vehicle slammed into a utility pole, which fell on top of the Cougar and sparked a massive fire.

Grote and her male passenger managed to escape before the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

She suffered a cut to her forehead, and her passenger has minor injuries.

Both were taken to Mercy West Hospital with minor injuries.

Duke Energy responded to repair the downed wires.
