JUNE 2, 2015

EAST ST. LOUIS, MO

A Missouri woman was killed when the SUV she was riding in flipped on Interstate 64 Monday night, according to the Illinois State Police.

The woman, 40, of Salisbury, Mo., was not identified by the agency. She was riding in the rear of the SUV with the rear seats folded down, and wasn't wearing a seat belt, troopers said. She was partly ejected from the vehicle when it crashed about 11:23 p.m. near the interchange with interstates 70 and 55.

The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old woman, was not wearing a seat belt, either, and was thrown from the SUV during the crash. She was seriously injured. A boy in the front passenger seat was wearing a seat belt and had minor injuries.

The 2002 Ford Explorer was westbound on 64 when the driver lost control of the wheel, troopers said. The SUV rolled over several times and hit the concrete median wall.

The woman who was killed was pronounced dead at 12:28 Tuesday morning at the scene.

The driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The youth was taken to St. Louis Children's Hospital with minor injuries. They are both from Salisbury as well. The town is west of Moberly and about 150 miles northwest of St. Louis.

Authorities aren't sure why the driver lost control. The crash remains under investigation.
