Elderly couple died in Estill County, Kentucky fire

May 24, 2015

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT)

Kentucky State Police are investigating a deadly fire in Estill County.

The fire started around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday on Ann Street in Irvine. Firefighters with the Irvine Fire Department tell WKYT that an elderly couple died in the fire.

Firefighters say that when they arrived at the fire scene, they found a man in the front yard. They say that the neighbors went into the burning home and rescued the man from the home. The neighbors told firefighters that the fire became to big for them to reach the man's wife, who was still inside the home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters say they were unable to save the man. When they put out the fire, they found the body of a woman inside the home.

Ronald Roberts says he's lived next door to the couple for almost ten years and was friends with them.

"They just like part of the family around here because this is a tight-knit community and everybody knows one another and everybody gets along good.

He'll be missed. Him and her both," Roberts told WKYT.

The names of the victims have not been released. Firefighters have not said what they believe caused the fire.
