Coast Guardsman found not guilty of sexual assault

Lady Justice 300PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Edwin R. Angulo, 26, was found not guilty on two specifications (counts) of violating Uniform Code of Military Justice Article 120 – Sexual Assault at the conclusion of a general court-martial Friday afternoon in Key West, Florida.

The court-martial verdict followed a three-month Coast Guard investigation, which indicated that there was sufficient evidence to refer the case to trial.

The Uniform Code of Military Justice is a Federal statute that covers many crimes contained in civilian criminal statutes, in addition to other military-specific offenses such as failure to obey an order, desertion, etc. Coast Guard members charged under the UCMJ are considered innocent unless proven guilty.
