5 Fire Engines were last night tackling a serious fire onboard an offshore construction vessel docked at Peterhead Harbour.

More than 80 oil workers were evacuated as the fire took hold and a special foam unit had to be brought in to supply extra foam as well as extra breathing apparatus.

Fire crews received the call to the Fugro Symphony just after 2.50am.

The exact cause of the blade aboard the vessel, moored at Merchants Quay, is not yet known. But it is believed to have started in an electrical switch room in the lower decks.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were called to a fire on the support vessel today.

“A total of 84 people had to be evacuated from the vessel as a result of the incident.

“They were then put into Peterhead’s Fisherman Mission Centre following the incident.

“We are not investigating the incident.”
