One person was killed and another was injured after two boats collided Saturday evening on the western side of the Roanoke Sound off the northern end of Roanoke Island.

Lt. Mark Rich with N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Law Enforcement said the collision happened around 6 p.m. and two people were aboard each vessel.

Other details were not available Saturday night as officers continued to investigate the accident, Rich said.

This is the second fatal boating accident in northeastern North Carolina waters in the past week. Last Saturday, a Virginia couple was killed when two boats collided in the Chowan River off Gates County.
