Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick confirmed that troopers were working a fatal accident at 1:07 p.m.

“A 2006 Ford pickup was stopped the left travel lane when a 2008 Freightliner tractor-trailer approached and struck the pickup pushing it into a 2011 Peterbilt, after striking the trailer of the Peterbilt the pickup veered right and struck a 2014 Subaru Outback, both the pickup and the Subaru came to rest on the right shoulder,” Vick wrote.

Officials said the driver of the pickup, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. The victim’s name will be released pending next-of-kin notification.
No other injuries were reported.

State police will provide details about possible charges related to the crash, which remains under investigation, later tonight.

While crews worked to cleanup the accident, VDOT told drivers to use the following detour:

Traffic is being diverted off at Powhite Parkway (Route 76) west to Charter Colony Parkway (Route 754) south to Genito Road (Route 604) west to Hull Street Road (Route 360) east back to Route 288 south. Drivers will need to use the collector distributor road near Lucks Lane to access the detour. Expect major delays.

The backup southbound totals almost 4 miles, beginning near Hull Street Road (Route 360). Traffic within the current backup may be directed through median crossovers to alleviate congestion.
