CARCINOGENIC SILICA SAND IS SPILLED IN BRADFORD COUNTY, PA, AFTER LEHIGH RAILWAY TRAIN DERAILMENT.

APRIL 6, 2015

ULSTER TOWNSHIP, BRADFORD COUNTY, PA

Seven cars of a Lehigh Railway train derailed Monday at a location between North Towanda and Ulster, the Bradford County public safety director said.

While most of the derailed cars remained upright, a couple of them came to rest on their sides, said Robert Barnes, Bradford County public safety director.  One of the cars went over an embankment and came to rest in a field, he said.
The derailed cars were carrying sand, some of which spilled during the incident, he said.

There were no injuries in the derailment, which occurred shortly before noon, he said.

A section of track was torn up during the derailment, he said.

Barnes said the length of track that was torn up or otherwise damaged might have been between 100 and 200 feet.

He said he believed the train was heading south when the derailment occurred.
Equipment will be brought in to get the overturned cars upright and remove the derailed cars from the area so the track can be repaired, he said.

He said he did not know if the cause of the derailment had been determined yet.

Carcinogenic silica sand is hauled to the local region to be used in the hydraulic fracturing of natural gas wells.
