MARCH 4, 2015

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA

One woman died and a man was injured Wednesday afternoon after the RV they were traveling in caught fire in Huntington Beach.
The Huntington Beach Fire and police Departments responded to a call at 2:43 p.m. that a motor home was on fire near Beach Boulevard and Talbert Avenue, said officer Jennifer Marlatt, spokeswoman for the Huntington Beach Police Department.
Officers arrived and saw the 51-year-old man outside the 1988 Ford motor home.
"The inside (of the RV) was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived," Marlatt said.
The officers attempted to rescue the woman inside but were beaten back by the heat of the flames, a police statement said.
Police and fire personnel found her deceased inside the motor home once the fire was extinguished. Her identity is still unknown.
Investigators said the RV had been at a Walmart parking lot at the 8000 block of Talbert Avenue before the fire. Witnesses told police they saw smoke coming from the vehicle before it left.
Once on the road, the man jumped out of the RV because of the smoke, and yelled to witnesses that a woman was inside as the vehicle veered off and hit a curb before coming to a stop.

The man, who lives in Huntington Beach, was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
