LACK OF FALL PROTECTION IS UNIVERSAL: CONSTRUCTION WORKER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN FALL FROM SCAFFOLDING AT SITE OF NEW SYNAGOGUE IN HACKNEY, LONDON, UK

MARCH 18, 2015

A construction worker was seriously injured after falling from scaffolding at the site of a new synagogue in Hackney.

The man, who ambulance crews said was aged in his 30s, also suffered chest injuries in the accident at the site in Overlea Road just before 5pm on Tuesday.

The site is being redeveloped as a synagogue and community centre, a spokesman for Jewish neighbourhood watch group Shomrim North East London said.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service took him to the Royal London hospital for treatment.

They were supported by ambulance workers from Hatzola North London, a voluntary Jewish medical organisation.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 4.45pm to the junction of Clapton Common and Overlea Road to reports of a fall at a construction site.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, a hazardous area response team and London's air ambulance.

"We treated a man reported to be in his 30s for a head and chest injury.
"He was taken, as a priority, to Royal London hospital."

A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive confirmed it was investigating the incident.
