HATFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA

A meat pack worker was severely injured Wednesday night at the Hatfield Quality Meats plant in Hatfield after officials say a 720-pound pallet of ham fell on his head.

The 30-year-old man was working at Hatfield Quality Meats at 2700 block of Clemens Road in Hatfield, Montgomery County, at 5:44 p.m. on Wednesday when the stack suddenly crashed down, according to NBC Philadelphia.

Some 36 hams, each weighing 20-pounds, plummeted to the ground.

The extent of the man’s injuries is unclear but the man was conscious and alert when paramedics arrived, said spokesperson John Reininger.  Since he had to airlift to the hospital, the injuries are very severe.

“The main thing we’re looking at is his overall safety and then we will look to see what might have caused the accident,” Reininger said.

A fire official confirmed that a medical helicopter landed outside of a Hatfield Fire Co. substation on Fairgrounds Road. The man was transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia. His condition was not immediately available.

The incident is under investigation.
