DELAWARE RIVER OIL SPILL WHEN 100 GALLONS SPILLED INTO THE WATER FROM THE REFRIGERATED CARGO SHIP WILD COSMOS

MARCH 10, 2015

The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an oil spill on the Delaware River. Globs of oil were seen washing ashore in Pennsville, N.J.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer David Candelaria said about 100 gallons spilled into the water from the refrigerated cargo ship Wild Cosmos.

The ship, which is registered in Argentina, was at the Port of Wilmington this week, according to a shipping schedule.

Officials for the port did not immediately respond to questions.

The oil was detected at about 1:30 p.m.

Pennsville police Chief Allen Cummings said the river was discolored. Evidence of the spill was seen near the Pennsville Boat Ramp on Riviera Drive.

“The smell of oil and fuel was strong,” he said.

Candelaria said it will take until at least until Wednesday to determine what caused the spill.

“The amount and source remains under investigation,” he said.
