MARCH 18, 2015

PLEASANT TOWNSHIP, INDIANA

Two people were killed and three people, including two students, suffered minor injuries when a Hebron school bus and a pickup truck were involved in a head-on collision late Tuesday morning.

The driver and passenger in the pickup truck, a 1995 Dodge Ram, were killed in the accident. Their identities are not known, according to Porter County, Indiana Coroner Chuck Harris; his office will be conducting routine toxicology screenings on them.

A school bus driver from the Metropolitan School District of Boone Township, Indiana, identified as a 52-year-old woman, and two Hebron students, ages 17 and 18, were transported to Porter Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Sgt. Larry LaFlower, public information officer for the Porter County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's deputies were called to Indiana 8, just west of Baums Bridge Road, around 11:20 a.m. for the accident. The school bus was eastbound on Ind. 8 when the pickup truck, which was westbound, went left of center and struck the school bus head-on.  Eyewitnesses told officials the pickup truck was attempting to pass a car, according to the coroner's press release.

Ind. 8 was closed for a few hours after the accident.

The Kouts and Hebron Volunteer Fire departments, Porter EMS, the Kouts Police Department, and the Indiana Department of Transportation also assisted at the accident scene.
