NTSB OPENS DOCKET ON 2013 CRASH OF BOEING 747 CARGO PLANE IN BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN

WASHINGTON--The National Transportation Safety Board today opened the accident docket as part of the ongoing investigation into the April 29, 2013 crash of a National Airlines Boeing 747 at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.

A National Air Cargo Boeing 747-400 freighter on behalf of US Mobility Command, registration N949CA performing cargo flight N8-102 from Bagram (Afghanistan) to Dubai Al Maktoum (United Arab Emirates) with 7 crew and cargo consisting of 5 military vehicles, has crashed shortly after takeoff from Bagram Air Base's runway 03 at 15:30L (11:00Z) and erupted into flames near the end of the runway within the perimeter of the Air Base. All 7 crew are reported perished in the crash and the airplane and its cargo was destroyed.

The information being released, which includes documents and photographs, is factual in nature. Additional material will continue to be added to the docket as it becomes available. Analysis of the accident, along with conclusions and a determination of probable cause will come at a later date when the final report on the investigation is completed.

This will be a document release only. No interviews will be conducted.

The investigation is being conducted in accordance with ICAO Annex 13. 

Initially, the investigation was led by the state of occurrence, the Republic of Afghanistan. The NTSB assisted as the accredited representative of the U.S., the state of manufacturer and the state of the operator. Last October, the Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority delegated the remainder of the investigation to the NTSB, which will include completing the final report.
