COLUMBUS, OHIO:

Two women were killed and two others were hospitalized after the vehicle they were traveling in crossed the I-70 median and crashed into a pole on the East Side early yesterday morning.  This was a single vehicle accident.

Columbus police are investigating the crash, which occurred around 2:45 a.m. yesterday on westbound I-70 between I-270 and S. Hamilton Road.

The driver of a 2005 Jeep Liberty crossed the I-70 median, crashing through a wire guardrail before the vehicle was pinned against a support pole for a highway sign, where it caught fire, according to a police press release.

The vehicle's passenger side had hit the pole, and a front-seat passenger was trapped inside, eventually burning to death.

A passerby pulled one passenger from the vehicle and another from under it. The front passenger was trapped inside the vehicle, according to the release.

Firefighters put out the blaze, but the front-seat passenger and the woman pulled from underneath the vehicle were dead at the scene, police said.

Two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, age 31, was taken to Grant Medical Center in serious condition. Another passenger, age 27, was taken to Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University in critical condition.

Police said they were investigating why the driver lost control.  If no medical condition involved, then the driver was either drunk or on drugs from a Friday night out for the 4 women.
