NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The northbound lanes of Tidewater Drive have reopened after a fatal auto-pedestrian accident Wednesday morning.

Norfolk police say they received a report of an accident with injuries along Tidewater Drive, near the intersection of Norview, around 5:23 a.m.

Norfolk police say 62-year-old Gary W. Bess Sr. of the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive was crossing Tidewater Drive along the pedestrian crosswalk when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck. Police said the truck was traveling northbound in the 3600 block of Tidewater Drive, through a green light, when the truck struck Bess Sr.

Bess Sr. was transported to the hospital where he later died. Police say the driver remained on scene.

According to a city spokeswoman, the director of public works, safety engineer and traffic engineer met Wednesday to talk about this intersection because of this crash. Spokeswoman Lori Crouch said the city officials are aware it’s an issue and that improvements were made previously but more fact-gathering needs to be done. From Jan. 1, 2010 to Feb. 3, 2015, 18 car crashes have been reported, which can include wrecks with and without injuries.

Police spokesman Daniel Hudson gave 10 On Your Side the accident breakdown:

2010 – Two accidents

2011 – Three accidents

2012 – Eight accidents

2013 – Two accidents

2014 – Three accidents

A silver pickup truck with a dented hood and a walker could be seen on the scene.

Police say the results of the investigation will be turned over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office for review and consideration for charges.

The northbound lanes of Tidewater Drive, between Norview and Willow Wood, were closed for almost three hours while police investigated.
