ORANGE, N.J. (WABC)

A three-alarm fire burned through two connected homes home in the early morning Wednesday.
Heavy fire shot out the windows and roof of a two-family home in the 200 block of North Day Street just before 2 a.m.

A neighbor saw the flames and called 911. At least one resident said he was inside when someone banged on his door, telling him to get out.

The fire started in the basement of the occupied building and spread to an abandoned home. Firefighters said attempting to battle the flames on the icy ground was like "being on ice skates"

A New Jersey Transit bus was brought in to temporarily house about a dozen people left homeless, including the four people who lived in the building that caught fire.
