A floor of a research building on the UCD Medical Center campus in Sacramento was evacuated due to a HAZMAT situation Wednesday afternoon.

The first floor of a 3-story research building on 2nd Avenue, near 45th Street, was emptied due to a carbon dioxide leak, UCD spokesperson Tricia Tomiyoshi said.

According to officials at the scene, an employee was working and accidentally bumped the carbon dioxide valve around 4 p.m. The floor was then evacuated as a precaution.

Sacramento Fire said in a tweet that the situation was possibly lessened by a safety ventilation system. The leak was shut off before 4:20 p.m., and the HAZMAT situation was reduced, the fire department said.

Tomiyoshi said the first floor remained evacuated as it was ventilated. People on the other floors safely remain inside of the building during the leak.

By 4:35 p.m., employees were allowed back inside the building.
No one was injured during the situation.
