Houston, Texas

Two teenage robbery suspects died Wednesday night when they slammed a stolen pickup into an apartment complex sign during a police chase.

The crash occurred about 11 p.m. in the 13600 block of Beechnut following a car-jacking in southwest Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said an officer with the Houston Police Department spotted a black Nissan Titan without its headlights on traveling westbound on Beechnut. Two teens were inside the truck. When the officer attempted to stop the pickup, the driver sped away.

Deputies said the pursuit reached speeds of about 80 mph. The pickup driver ran a red light and then lost control of the truck. The pickup veered from the road and smashed into a large masonry sign at the Campanile on Eldridge Apartments.

The force of the crash, deputies said, pinned the driver in his seat. He died at the scene. His name has not been released but deputies said he was 17 years old. The passenger, age 19, was thrown from the truck and also died at the scene. His name has not been released.  Most certainly, they will not steal cars again.

Investigators said they later determined the truck had been stolen in a car-jacking a short time before the crash. Deputies found a shotgun and a pistol inside the pickup.

Deputies are investigating the crash, which occurred in Harris County, while HPD is investigating the car-jacking. No information about the car-jacking, including where it happened, was available.
