PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A fire in a Portsmouth church leaves smoke damage throughout the building.

Around 1 p.m., firefighters got a call for a smell of smoke at 2215 Chestnut Street. Crews had to force entry into the place of worship and got the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

Chief Jim Hoffler said there was not a lot of serious fire damage, but smoke damage was throughout the church.

The pastor was on scene, and investigators are working to determine a cause.
