FREMONT, Ind. (WANE) – Firefighters found a large hay stack on fire inside a barn full of cows Friday morning, according to the Fremont Fire Department. Fire crews learned that animals may have been inside the building when they responded to the fire at 3217 E 700 N just before 2 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the roof of the barn with three calves still inside. The cows were able to escape through the back of the barn without injuries.

Fire crews got inside through a garage door on the barn. Once inside, they found a large hay stack in the middle of the barn from the floor to the ceiling fully engulfed. Crews put out the fire quickly but because of the amount of hay firefighters were on scene for about two hours putting out hot spots and removing the hay.

The roof of the barn suffered heavy fire damage. Fire investigators said the extent of the damage is $20,000.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Angola Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene. Fremont Fire Department was assisted by Fremont Police Department, Steuben County EMS, Steuben County Communications, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, and Vanderpool Construction.
