BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Birmingham police say a 55-year-old man died after a house fire near 27th Street North and 35th Avenue North on Tuesday.

Officials say the man was trying to escape the duplex but did not make it.

Four other families were displaced in the duplex.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – One person was found dead at the scene of an apartment fire on 35th Avenue North in Birmingham Tuesday afternoon, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis.


He says a 55-year-old man was found dead, and authorities believe he died from smoke inhalation. The man was found in the front room of the apartment.

Mardis says the fire broke out in a single-story structure with five apartment units. Five people were living at the location at the time of the fire. Other units sustained smoke damage in the blaze, and the American Red Cross is being dispatched to the scene to assist the impacted residents.
