HILL COUNTY, TEXAS.  Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating an early-morning crash on Interstate 35 in Hill County that left one man dead.

The DPS identified the victim early Thursday afternoon as Johnny Ray Carroll, 61, of Plano.

Carroll was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic north on the interstate at around 6:35 a.m. Thursday when the car veered onto the shoulder of the highway and struck a parked 18-wheeler, Trooper D.L. Wilson said.

The front half of the car ended up beneath the trailer of the rig, which was stopped on the shoulder to switch drivers.

Carroll was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one in the cab of the 18-wheeler, which is hauling auto parts from Laredo to Kentucky, was injured, Wilson said.

The accident happened at mile marker 362 near the rest area in Hill County, Wilson said.
