UPPER WEST SIDE, NYC (WABC) --
A construction worker died after falling one story down an elevator shaft on the Upper West Side.

Police say the worker fell in the shaft inside 130 West 70th Street, which is an unoccupied building under construction.

The worker fell 1 story and was taken to Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The New York City Buildings Department is on the scene investigating.

Falls are the leading cause of deadly injuries to construction workers. There have been several deadly elevator fall incidents in New York City during the last few months.
