MANY ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY “BLACK ICE” AND OTHER SLIPPERY ROAD CONDITIONS ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29 AND 30 2014.

(KUTV) There were crashes all along the Wasatch Front tonight as temperatures dropped and icy roads proved hazardous for drivers.

One serious crash piled up on the border between Davis and Salt Lake Counties when, according to troopers, a car with two adults and three children rolled off the freeway and onto Beck Street. One child sustained only mild injuries while the rest of the passengers in the car were unharmed.

But the accident, according to police, caused a chain reaction leading a nine-car pileup as vehicles behind the car crashed. Officials say black ice is partly to blame.
The tally of Monday’s accidents is significant. Police reported 51 crashes in Davis County, 86 wrecks in Salt Lake County and 90 accidents in Utah County as well as the significant pile up in Tooele county reported elsewhere.

Two troopers were injured in crashes in crashes, the first in Davis county when a car crashed into the back of a UHP car on the side of the road investigating a crash. The second took place in Utah County when an SUV slid into a troopers vehicle.

The Highway Patrol says there are too many close calls involving troopers.
“Our worst fear is that one is going to be outside the vehicle and be hit and have a trooper seriously injured or killed,” said Sgt. Todd Royce.

The UHP wants to remind drivers that if they are in an accident and hurt, stay in your car and call for help. If you and your car are okay, drive to the nearest exit before calling law enforcement.

Icy roads cause rush hour wrecks in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Icy conditions are blamed for several morning rush hour accidents in the St. Louis region.

Ice formed overnight, causing interstate highways to be slippery in spots Monday morning. The biggest of the accidents was a five-vehicle wreck on Interstate 64 near downtown. At least two other accidents snarled traffic on I-64, causing delays in both directions.

More than a dozen accidents were reported by shortly after dawn, including wrecks on Interstate 55 and Interstate 70.

No serious injuries were immediately reported.
