FIRE DESTROYS HOME’S ROOF, INJURES FIREFIGHTER IN EL PASO, TEXAS

Fire destroys home’s roof, injures firefighter IN EL PASO, TEXAS

EL PASO, Texas – Firefighters were called out at midnight Christmas morning to battle a house fire in the 1000 block of Calle Parque Drive in West El Paso.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the home’s roof. Upon investigation, they found heavy flames in the home’s attic.

The family living in the home was able to escape safely, according to battalion chief Sergio Armendariz.

“Everybody that was inside the house was able to get out. The smoke detectors alerted them,” said Armendariz.

More than 30 firefighters worked to put out the fire and the blaze was extinguished within an hour. Fire officials said 75 percent of the unit suffered heavy fire and smoke damage.  The cause of the fire has not been released.

The El Paso Fire Department reports that one firefighter was injured while battling the flames.

Armendariz warns people to be careful and celebrate Christmas responsibly.

“Be careful with the trees not to leave the lights on when everybody is asleep, and also the chimneys- have them checked; some of them don’t function correctly. Also, when you go to sleep, make sure the fire is out in the chimney completely,” said Armendariz.
