OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC)
An 18-wheeler carrying corrosive and flammable materials overturned on Highway 78 near Red Banks Road.

DeSoto County Sheriff's Office shut down westbound and eastbound directions on Highway 78 southeast of Olive Branch around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputies reopened eastbound traffic a little later, but kept westbound lanes closed for more than seven hours while crews cleaned the area.

The 18-wheeler was carrying thousands of pounds of acid-filled batteries, as well as sodium hydroxide and hydrosulfide. All of those materials needed to be carried out of the truck by hand.

Deputies said that will take a long time.

Traffic was diverted to Highway 178 to Red Banks while crews work to clean up the crash. Traffic was backed up at least 10 miles into Marshall County.

Deputies added that the truck driver was taken to Methodist hospital in Olive Branch in good condition.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

8,000 Gallons of Ethanol up in Smoke, Overpass Damaged in Ohio when Tanker Truck Overturned

Crews inspecting Ohio bridge after morning tanker fire

Damage to overpass may take days to repair

UPDATED 3:57 PM EDT Jul 01, 2015
COLUMBUS, OHIO (AP) —

A central Ohio highway remains closed as authorities inspect damage to an interstate bridge after an overturned tanker truck caught fire.
Ohio Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Bruning says Interstate 70 remained closed at Interstate 270 on the west side of Columbus as inspectors evaluated damage Wednesday.

He says there appears to be damage to the concrete and reinforcing bars of the I-70 eastbound bridge above I-270.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lane of I-270, with flames extending above onto I-70.

Both highways were initially closed in both directions as crews contained the flames amid the morning commute.

Police say the driver, who was able to escape without serious injury, told authorities the tanker contained about 8,000 gallons of ethanol.

Officers were called to the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park just after 8 p.m. Monday on a report of a missing 44-year-old woman.

Dangerous conditions forced suspension of the search until Tuesday morning, when the Fremont County Search and Rescue Team responded and found the woman’s body about 400 feet below the observation point on the cliff face.

“At this time, the fall appears to be accidental with no foul play suspected,” the Canon City Police Department said.

Michelle Mian, 21, was walking to her car when this damaged tree crashed down and killed her.
NEW MILFORD — A 21-year-old woman was struck and killed when a tree snapped and came crashing down this morning outside her home on River Edge Avenue, authorities said.
Police believe Michelle Mian was walking to her car on River Edge Avenue when the large Norway maple tree split in half, likely from damage suffered during overnight storms, Detective Lt. Brian Long said. She was on her way to a 7:30 a.m. class at Bergen Community College, where she was studying to become a radiology technician, said her sister, Tabish Mian, 23.
The top half of the tree and branches struck her, and Tabish found her on the ground outside when she went to check on the cars and called for help.

"I just woke up in the morning and came to the car and saw that her body was there on the ground,” Tabish said. “And then I saw she wasn't breathing either, and then we called the ambulance immediately."
"She was the most amazing person in the entire world and my better half, really,” she added. “If you met her, you would have known how beautiful, artistic, talented — she's the kindest person you'll ever meet. She's amazing in so many ways. It's not fair that she's not here with us right now. It's really not."
Tabish described her sister as a “beautiful soul” who enjoyed makeup, henna art, fashion and music.
"I'm never going to be OK with this; I never will be," she said. "She is a very smart girl, actually. She loved helping others. She was very artistic, she loved art."
“Anything you put to her, she could do any type of art,” echoed her friend, Samia Khan, 19, of Bergenfield. “She's so good at that."
Lt. William Duby Jr. and officers Bryan Mone and Robert Sokol of the New Milford police found Mian under a large tree limb next to the driver’s side of a silver Volkswagen Passat, Long said. It’s unclear what caused the tree to break but the lieutenant noted the town experienced heavy rain overnight. Three other officers began CPR but she was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, where she worked as a student intern.
The tree broke between 6:30 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. Cars in the driveway were hit by branches, smashing the back windshield of one.

Imtiaz Mian, the father of Michelle Mian, is consoled by his friend at Darul Islah at the Muslim Center of Bergen County in Teaneck on Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

She lived with her parents and an older brother and sister in the Demarest-Bloomer House on River Edge Avenue, a historic home built in Greek Revival style around 1840 on the banks of the Hackensack River. Mian was born and raised in Bergenfield, but the family moved to New Milford and the Demarest Bloomer House less than a year attracted by the home’s history, Tabish said.

Dozens of family members came to the home Wednesday morning, including many women in traditional Muslim dress. The tree remained split in the driveway, its trunk about 25 feet high and the fallen half about the same height and about a foot and a half wide, with long, leafy branches on both sides. The family is planning a funeral at a Teaneck mosque.

“They’re crying and crying and crying,” said a relative who declined to give his name. “What are the chances you go outside and a tree falls at the same time?”
Mian was studying radiography at Bergen Community College and would have graduated in a year.

"Bergen Community College mourns the tragic passing of Michelle Mian,” said college spokesman Larry Hlavenka Jr. in a statement. “The College offers its most sincere condolences to her family and friends. Counselors are available for students, faculty and staff."

Mian graduated from Bergenfield High School in 2012.

“Our hearts and prayers and thoughts go out to the Mian family,” Principal Jim Fasano said. “We’re all stunned and shocked here.”

Fasano described Mian as having a “contagious smile” that “just lit up the hallways and the classrooms.” As a junior and senior, she was heavily involved in the school’s health career academy, where she took college-level classes through the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

“She just always wanted to help people,” Fasano said.

Tabish Mian, right, found her younger sister Michelle Mian beneath a tree in the driveway as Tabish was leaving for work Wednesday morning. Pictured with Tabish is a friend of the two sisters.

Mian worked as a student intern at Holy Name Medical Center as well.
"Michelle was an exceptional student from the very beginning of her clinical training at Holy Name,” Sue Tate-Potanovic, assistant administrative director of radiology, said in a statement. “She was motivated and eager to learn, and was extremely sweet, kind and caring to everyone she met.  Michelle truly understood the meaning of quality patient care and her compassion for our patients was evident. We were blessed to have known her, and extend our deepest condolences to her family."

Her friends described her as a hard-working woman who was great for advice.
"She can make you laugh when you're literally crying,” Samia Khan said.

"She was one of the most hard-working people I know,” added Khan’s sister Mahtab, 21. “A lot of it was dedication to her parents … I'm sure they were very proud of her. And we all are. She was a really great person."

Mian worked at Sona Beauty Salon in Bergenfield, said customer Lyla Moran, 15, of Tenafly, who only trusted Mian with threading her eyebrows.
“I brought all my friends and family,” Moran said. “Just being around her, you were so calm.”

A line of thunderstorms passed through the area between 4 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, dumping about an inch of rain in that time, according to the National Weather Service. Wind gusts reached about 40 mph, toppling trees in nearby River Edge, the weather service said.

Mian is one of several North Jersey residents who have been killed in recent years by falling trees following storms. In Teaneck in 2010, a 50-foot Norwegian maple tree cracked during a nor’easter and struck two men as they were walking home from synagogue. A Hawthorne man was killed during Superstorm Sandy when a blown-over tree crashed into the second floor of his home.

A Caltrain struck and killed a woman in Belmont this morning, according to a transit agency spokeswoman.

The woman was struck at about 8:25 a.m. by southbound train No. 220 near the Belmont station, Caltrain spokeswoman Jayme Ackemann said.

The woman, who had apparently trespassed onto the tracks, was pronounced dead at the scene, Ackemann said.

A 25-year-old woman was killed when she crashed into a car carrying five people, including an infant, at Mineta San Jose International Airport this morning, a police spokesman said.

The crash happened near the airport's Terminal B at about 10:30 a.m.

The woman, whose name is not yet being released, was apparently speeding south in a red two-door Pontiac when she struck a silver Audi SUV that was turning left into a parking structure, San Jose police Officer Albert Morales said.

The woman in the Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene, while all five people in the Audi, including the infant, were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries. All five are expected to survive, Morales said.

Three airlines operate out of Terminal B: Southwest, Alaska and Hainan, which recently began offering non-stop flights from San Jose to Beijing, airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said.

Traffic investigators remain at the airport this morning to determine how the crash happened.

Barnes said airport officials are recommending that passengers heading to and from the airport allow extra time to get there because of traffic disruptions from the police investigation, which is expected to last into the afternoon.

Greeks Be Brave and Vote "No" ("OXI") on Sunday, July 5, 2015

We believe that Greece should vote "No" (OXI) to the terms and conditions imposed by creditors.  Enough is enough. They should not be blackmailed anymore.  When they slowly grow back their economy, then they would start paying back their debt.

We would also recommend that they print their own currency, in parallel with the Euro.  The drachma currency would be used to pay for social programs not provided by the EU.

The creditors made loans to Greece and they should have known that they cannot repay them back.  Too bad.  When you make bets, you lose some and you win some.  They need to write down Greece's debt and move on.

//-----------------///

On Sunday, Greeks will vote in a referendum on whether the government should accept creditors' terms for a new bailout deal.
Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras earlier today encouraged Greeks to vote "No." Reuters also reported that public opinion is already skewing in that direction.
And in a blog post on Wednesday afternoon, Greece's finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, wrote on why the government is recommending a "No" vote, in six short bullets.
Here's the summary:
  • Negotiations were halted in the first place because creditors did not want to trim Greece's debt. Instead, they would like the amount to be paid, in full, in the future, by the "weakest members" of society — children and grandchildren.
  • The IMF and the US believe that the debt should be restructured.
  • In 2012, the Eurogroup also gave this opinion, but refused to commit to it.
  • "Official Europe" would also vote "No," since they are in favor of restructuring Greece's debt.
  • "Greece will stay in the euro. Deposits in Greece’s banks are safe," he wrote, as banks remained closed for a third day. "Creditors have chosen the strategy of blackmail based on bank closures."
  • And so the best way forward is for Greece to stay in the Eurozone, vote "No" on Sunday, and go back to the negotiating table with creditors.
Earlier on Wednesday, a letter Tsipras wrote indicating that the government was willing to accept most of the creditors' terms leaked.  Of course Tsipras is making fun of the Germans, the Dutch and the other Europeans (god bless him) and he is keeping them guessing.

Just after midnight in Athens on Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund confirmed that Greece had missed its €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) payment due, just as the country's bailout program ended.  Tough luck!  Greece, do not pay the money.  The creditors should write off the debt and move on.  Too bad that they made bad loans.

CSX maintenance truck carrying a 100-pound propane tank caught fire on the railroad tracks in Dacula, Georgia

DACULA, GEORGIA

A CSX maintenance truck carrying a 100-pound propane tank caught fire Tuesday morning on a set of railroad tracks in Dacula.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County fire department said crews were dispatched just after 10 a.m. to the tracks off Winder Highway, near Waffle House. Roads closed as the Gwinnett Fire Hazardous Materials Response Team worked to contain the volatile gas, a task completed without injuries.

“It appears that the fire was sparked by a hydraulic motor mounted next to the tank on the truck,” Rutledge said. “The fire damaged the valve to the propane tank and allowed gas to escape and quickly ignite.

But that the vapors burned helped firefighters. It allowed them to focus hoses on the tank to keep it cool and minimize the risk of a greater blaze.

The most tense moment was when a “slight amount” of propane gas escaped the tank and didn’t ignite, the spokesman said.

“The gas is heavy and hugs the ground until it dissipates or finds an ignition source,” Rutledge said.

The spot where the fire burned was on the edge of a shady neighborhood along Circle Road. The tracks also butt against an aging mechanic shop with a barking dog guarding the door.

Trains began to move again around 12:30 p.m., shortly after workers removed the truck from the tracks. Rutledge said the blaze was under control after noon and was contained to the back of the truck.

CO-PILOT DIES, PILOT SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER A DIAMOND DA20-100 KATANA SMALL PLANE HITS POWER LINES AND CRASHES IN A BALL OF FIRE IN EGELSBACH GERMANY. A TRAIN THEN COLLIDES WITH THE PLANE REMNANTS!!

JUNE 30, 2015

EGELSBACH, GERMANY

At the Egelsbach Airport morning crashed a plane today.  The co-pilot was killed. The pilot of the aircraft is critically injured.

This morning at 10.42 clock came it at the airfield in Egelsbach to a plane crash. The two-seater aircraft flew shortly after takeoff apparently too low, collided with a utility pole to the railway line and crashed - in January 2003, there were at the same place to another crash.

The plane then struck on the embankment and burned out. On board the small aircraft of the type "Diamond DA 20 Katana" the pilot and his co-pilot, a couple from Frankfurt.

The 65 year old woman died, the 64-year-old pilot was critically injured. Immediately afterwards drove a freight train as planned over.

Here, the train collided with a lying in the tracks burning part of the aircraft and ripped the top line over a length approximately 400 meters from.

The collision that part was thrown on the railway embankment, which then became on fire.  A commuter train was in time be stopped before the accident site, so that a greater disaster was prevented.

By the catenary damage the rail rests between Darmstadt and Frankfurt ( lines S3 and S4 ) , and probably for a long time : The lines are completely torn , a mast is bent.

Also the air traffic to Egelsbach is currently locked . Numerous task forces and two rescue helicopters were in use .

However, the woman's life could not be saved . She succumbed to her injuries . The Criminal Offenbach and the experts of the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation took over the investigation.

Today's plane crash is not the first deadly in the history of the airfield Egelsbach.  Also in March 2012 at the Egelsbach Airport there was a crash of an airplane that killed five people . More information will follow shortly.
